Typewriter Stories with Dr. Sparks and Cecilia Olivera-Hillway!

8am Pacific / 11am Eastern

Let’s use a mechanical typewriter to come up with a story together!

Doctor Sparks has been writing stories for people on his typewriter for six years. He wants to write your story next! Give him a prompt, he’ll ask you questions, and together you’ll figure out how the story is goes. The stories are illustrated by Cecilia Olivera-Hillway, and you’ll receive the typewritten story in the mail when it’s done.

Register HERE in advance to be part of the story or watch and comment LIVE on the Family Maker Camp Facebook page or Make:Kids Youtube channel.

Doctor Sparks, Karl Smith, is a storyteller, scientist, maker, engineer, and performer. https://www.doctorsparks.com/

The Buzz with Adam & Harv

8:45am Pacific / 11:45am Eastern

Have you heard The Buzz?

Join Adam Lazarus, bug expert and enthusiast, and Harv the animated stick bug to learn about bugs!

Blending some of the latest concepts in TV entertainment and DIY research, The Buzz is a science show where we explore current trends across the STEM fields and work together on at-home experiments, all within the story and plot of every episode. Hosted by science teacher and PBS host Adam Lazarus and animated Lord Howe Island stick insect Harv Stickly, we’ll take some of the cutting edge science out there, and bring it home to you.

Register on the CodeJoy site to participate fully (space is limited), or watch LIVE on the Family Maker Camp Facebook page or on the Make: Kids Youtube channel.

Note: Participants or their guardians will need to sign a video/streaming release form to join the Zoom session.

CodeJoy Presents Robot Romeo!

9:30am Pacific/12:30pm Eastern

Join Kelsey Derringer to learn to code and make robots!

World-famous director, Sir Basil Boxington, is frustrated with his robotic actors. They are forgetting their lines, missing their cues, and they are not bringing any feeling to one of the most dramatic scenes in all of Shakespeare’s plays: The sword fight between Mercutio, Tybalt, and Romeo. Sir Boxington needs some programmers to debug this show before opening night. Join the CodeJoy classroom to learn the basics of coding and explore the genius of William Shakespeare.

No special hardware is needed for you to interact with our in-studio robots. We’ll be coding movements, learning basic CS principles, and exploring robotics.

MATERIALS:
  • Laptop or Chromebook to program on, preferably separate from your Zoom viewing device. (EX: Watch Zoom on a phone, code on a Chromebook.)
