STEP 1

Measure Your Fellow Campers

Using the Science Journal app, measure the acceleration of each camper as they run and jump. Use the pouch made in the Playground Physics activity, or have them hold the phone firmly.

Use the sound level sensor to take a measurement as they yell. Make sure to add a note in each test to indicate which camper the test was for.

(Note: Some phones limit the decibel levels they can measure; if yours does, move the phone to a specific distance to detect the lower dB level accurately, and measure each camper from the same spot.)

Take a picture of each camper in action.

STEP 2

Create the Card

Download the Maker Camp Trading Card Template (PNG, XCF (Gimp), or PSD (Photoshop) and open it with your image editing software.

(If you don’t have an image editing program, Gimp is a freely shared software that we recommend. This video tutorial will help you get up to speed on using it for our cards.)

Open the photo of each camper and copy it in as a new layer behind the template layer. Resize and adjust the photo so it fits into the open square on the left.

In the red banner, type each camper’s name. On the right hand side, type in the stats that you collected for that camper.

Next, get creative and let the campers add some of their own personal pieces of information. Righty or lefty, favorite color, or anything else you want to put on there!

Your card is ready to print!

STEP 3

Print and Glue

Print out the cards on card stock with a color printer, then cut out each card. Fold the card in half and glue the two sides together.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Maker cards are a great way for your campers to remember each other after camp is over. Why not find other experiments to add to the cards? Who can do 10 pushups the fastest? Who is the limbo champ? Who can jump the farthest? Why not list each camper’s favorite Maker Camp project for the year? These are all great additions to your cards and make them each unique.
